Mainly Music

Tiree has a rich tradition of music, a fact we had discovered before we came to live on the island. In our hunger for anything Tiree we had watched ‘In Trusadh: Tiree – Outside the Box’ on BBC Alba. It is a tribute to self taught box player, and island tutor, Gordon Connell, who won ‘Music Tutor of the Year’ at the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2010. Some of Scotland’s top box players pay tribute to the role of their mentor, amongst them are Donald Shaw from Capercaille, Angus MacPhail from Skipinnish, Daniel Gillespie from Skerryvore, and Phil Cunningham.

Tiree Music Festival, awarded ‘Best Small Festival in Scotland’ and held in July, is an event unlike any other. Daniel Gillespie and fellow Tiree local Stewart MacLennan had the vision for a two-day island adventure with live music at its heart – not one specific genre of music but everything from traditional to contemporary, established chart acts to breakthrough bands. They decided to make it happen and each year the festival has grown and grown with plans to make it even larger in 2014.

Albeit a different genre, ‘Mainly Music’ aims to provide an environment where preschool children develop skills to enhance their preschool education, through the use of music, rhythm, rhyme, and other music related activities with the participation of a parent or primary caregiver. It is an excellent opportunity for adults and children to build memories and spend time together, sharing special time with each other. Led by Ishbel Campbell, Rebecca Wright and a group of dedicated volunteers from Tiree Baptist Church, Mainly Music celebrates its 5th Birthday on Saturday 21st September. The event is being held in An Talla, the Island’s Community Centre and promises food, fun and a mainly music session.
