A West End Gem

At the West End of Tiree, in the township of Balemartine, you’ll find a real gem. The line of parked cars probably indicates that you have arrived at the Farmhouse Cafe. A renovated barn is home to the cafe made all the more attractive by the light, airy sun lounge with outstanding view towards Ben Hynish.

Outside is a wooden patio with views of Mark’s highland cows, sheep, pony and ducks – appealing to both adults and children. Being family friendly the cafe is a draw for both island and visiting families. Inside is a coffee lounge area with comfortable sofas and chairs. There is also a small gift section with a selection of cards, postcards and holiday gift ideas.

Mark and Fiona offer a selection of speciality coffees, home baking and light lunches – and a children’s menu. A recent review by a visitor to the island sates, “We have recently returned from a holiday on Tiree, and had lunch here 3 times, each time the food was excellent, and the welcome was outstanding, nothing was too much trouble, its a real gem and will be recommending this venue.” Another reviewer enthuses, “An amazing little cafe and we were made so welcome on our first visit that we came straight back on the next day. This is a real find and a must for lunch if visiting this end of the island.”

To make plenty of room for our lunch we had a walk along Balinoe/Soroby beach and left the cafe more than satisfied. One thing we appreciate is Mark’s enthusiasm for his animals. One thing we would recommend is phoning to book a table, as especially in the school holidays the cafe can have a waiting list. This is in itself speaks highly of this West End Gem. To Mark, Fiona and all the staff thanks for great lunches and your friendly welcome. You are much appreciated.
