Twenty Sixteen has been the year of A’ Bhuain, the sun drenched Tiree Home Coming event. Although blue skies and seas cannot be guaranteed every Wednesday for CalMac’s Experience Tiree Tour, whatever the weather Tiree is a must visit island. ‘The Land below the Waves’ has some of the highest levels of sunshine in the UK and its stunning white beaches draw surfers from across the world.
The excitement begins when you board the MV Clansman at Oban Ferry Terminal and mounts as you cruise up the spectacular Sound of Mull, stopping en route at the island of Coll before heading on to Tiree.

On arrival you are met by the local coach to begin your guided tour of the island. Providing there is availability island residents and visitors can join the tour without going all the way back to Oban.
Join the Experience Tiree Tour and your guide, Mabel, with her great knowledge of the island and its history brings your tour to life. She will point out not just the Machair and amazing beaches but also some of the traditional thatched houses, felt roofers and the unique spotty houses.
You stop at the Scarinish Hotel for lunch and there is the opportunity to have afternoon tea at the Cobbled Cow.
The tour takes in a visit to the Skerryvore Lighthouse Exhibition, Heylipol Church and the delightful Chocolates and Charms. You hear about ‘Tiree’s part in WW2, the Kelp Industry, the Clearances, the Crofters’ Uprising and other items of historic and current interest.’
Back in 2011 the Tour was on a Thursday and was to prove most significant – in a very real sense this was the beginning of ‘Life on Tiree’.
