There’s More To Tiree

There is more to Tiree than the most amazing beaches
There is more than dramatic sunrises and sunsets.
There is more than fierce winter storms.
There is a real sense of community.

Community is much more than a word on the Isle of Tiree.
It finds expression in so many different ways.
It can mean being there for one another.
It is often sharing joys and sorrows.

Age is not the same divide it often is in larger communities.
This past weekend this was a reality at Tigh-A-Rudha
Tigh-A-Rudha Is the island’s eventide home.
Frequently young and old share a cèilidh
This Saturday was their Christmas Party and Cèilidh.
Imagine! It started at 6:30pm and finished about 11:00pm

Residents, staff, musicians and guests gathered in the lounge.
There were several accordions, a keyboard, two fiddles, two guitars and a harp.
In total there were 11 musicians – so how many box players were there?
Sets were followed by solos from various talented singers.
Part way through the evening we were treated to a feast.
And what a feast it was.

Tiree’s oldest lady was about to celebrate another birthday.
She had the honour of cutting the Christmas cake.
Which was later brought round.
Mmmm!

Was it sleigh bells that could be heard?
As we sang Jingle Bells Santa arrived.
He was clearly showing his age.
A zimmer frame providing support.
Yet, as he began to distribute gifts
he found a new lease of life
His wit as sharp as ever.

What a great evening.
What a good example of our caring community.
All ages coming together – a pre-schooler to those well over sixty.

Tigh-A-Rudha is more than an eventide home – it is a caring community.
In this home they go above and beyond what is required of them.
Here the staff truly respect those in their care.
This is Life on Tiree.
